Coronation Street Star Shuts Down Quit Rumours as He Commits to Soap

Coronation Street star Jonathan Howard has firmly dismissed speculation that he is leaving the cobbles, committing to his role as the manipulative Carl Webster. The actor, who joined the soap in 2025, had previously hinted at a limited stint, but now reveals he plans to stay on to see through his character's complex storyline involving his mother Debbie's dementia.

Carl's Controversial Reign

Since arriving on the Street, Carl has made a significant impact as a 'bad boy' mechanic. He destroyed his brother Kevin's marriage by seducing Abi Webster, conducted a secret affair with James Bailey, and involved teenagers Brody Michaelis and Dylan Wilson in a car-theft ring. His actions led to a hit-and-run on Tyrone Dobbs and a fatal pile-up that killed Billy Mayhew. In a shocking twist, he manipulated his mother Debbie, who has early-onset dementia, into believing she was responsible for the crash, allowing her to go to prison for his crime.

Social Media Games

Fans were puzzled when Jonathan posted a selfie from the Coronation Street set after the murder episodes aired, hinting at his character's survival. He later admitted to playing with fans' expectations. 'I do love the soap fans. I'm not big into social media, but I've noticed people are really intrigued to know. So I can have a little fun,' he told The Mirror.

Commitment to Debbie's Story

Originally, Jonathan signed on for 12 months, but the dementia storyline has changed his perspective. 'I think we’d be missing out on something for Carl to leave before he’s come to terms with his mum’s dementia diagnosis. I would at least like to stay until we see what happens to Debbie, then we’ll see what happens after that,' he explained.

With his charismatic portrayal of a villain, fans can expect more drama from Carl Webster as he navigates his twisted family dynamics.
