Great Yarmouth's Britannia Pier has been named the UK's best pier for 2026, triumphing over 62 other promenades across the country in a competition held by the National Piers Society. The pier, which sits on a long sandy beach, promises a 'world of entertainment' for visitors of all ages.
A Victorian Gem Restored
Originally built in 1858, Britannia Pier has a storied history. It was demolished and reconstructed several times, including after a devastating fire, before being rebuilt in 1958. Today, it is three times its original size, thanks to significant investment from its current owners, who acquired it in 2022 and pledged £2.2 million towards continuous improvements.
Attractions for Everyone
The pier boasts a wide range of attractions, from classic fairground rides like dodgems, a carousel, bungee trampolines, giant slides, teacups, and a ghost train, to modern VR experiences and video games. It also features an enhanced entrance facade, new food outlets, and an onsite pub.
For adults, there is a packed schedule of live shows, an over-18s casino, two bars, and a nightclub. The pier's theatre, one of only five remaining in the country, hosts stand-up comedy, tribute acts, singalongs, and theatrical productions.
Visitor Reviews
Visitors have praised the pier's renovation. One TripAdvisor reviewer said: 'I was not looking forward to seeing the new pier as I was nostalgic for the old style, but good news is, the new pier looks fantastic and has been well renovated; it feels so much more spacious now!' Another added: 'A typical British pier. All the things you'd expect: bars, food, funfair, amusements. Worth a visit, lots to do. Nice view.'
With its blend of traditional seaside charm and modern attractions, Britannia Pier has become a genuine entertainment hotspot in Great Yarmouth, ensuring its place as the UK's best pier for 2026.
