British rock icon Billy Idol has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award, celebrating a remarkable 50-year music career he once believed would only last six months. The "Rebel Yell" singer received the prestigious accolade to a standing ovation at the American Music Awards (AMAs), held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Monday night.
The 70-year-old artist brought the glitzy, star-studded ceremony to a close with powerful renditions of "Eyes Without a Face" and "Dancing with Myself," his breakthrough solo hit from 1981, following his departure from punk band Generation X. Accepting his award, Idol thanked his fans, stating: "I've been able to live my dream, and it's really all because of you." He reflected on his punk rock beginnings: "When I started out in punk rock back in 1976, we thought it may only last about six months, let alone 50 years."
He added that their motivation was "for the love and because music was the only thing that gave us a sort of feeling of freedom, a sense of freedom." Idol encouraged aspiring artists: "pick an instrument, find out who you are and be it." He then joined his band on stage, promising to show the cheering crowd "what a hit song sounds like."
Other Major Winners at the 2026 AMAs
Elsewhere at the 52nd annual awards, South Korean boy band BTS clinched the coveted Artist of the Year title. The group, recently reunited after completing their country's mandatory 18-month military service, triumphed over a strong field including Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, and Justin Bieber. BTS also secured the new Song of the Summer award for their track "Swim."
The Song of the Year accolade went to Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, the real-life voices behind the fictional girl group Huntr/x from the Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters, for their UK number one hit "Golden." The Black Eyed Peas won the new Best Throwback Song category for "Rock That Body," while girl group Katseye, formed in 2023 on the reality TV show The Debut: Dream Academy, was named New Artist of the Year.
Rock and R&B Categories
Sombr picked up both Best Rock/Alternative Song for "Back to Friends" and Best Rock/Alternative Album for "I Barely Know Her," with Twenty One Pilots earning Best Rock/Alternative Artist. Leon Thomas was recognised as Breakthrough R&B Artist, and SZA took home Best Female R&B Artist.
International and Country Honours
Colombian singer-songwriter Karol G was presented with the International Artist of Excellence award and also won Best Latin Album for Tropicoqueta. Sam Barber was named Breakthrough Country Artist. The ceremony, hosted by rapper Queen Latifah, featured performances from acts such as the Pussycat Dolls, New Kids on the Block, and Keith Urban, who performed "Summer Breeze." The event coincided with Memorial Day, a time when the US honours its war dead. In recognition of his advocacy for military personnel, singer Darius Rucker received the Veterans Voice Award. Due to time constraints, not all 50 award categories were announced during the televised broadcast.
