Argentina fined €250k by FIFA over Falklands banner

Argentina have been fined €250,000 (£214,000) by FIFA for displaying a Falkland Islands-inspired banner after beating England in the World Cup semi-final. The banner, which read 'Las Malvinas Son Argentinas' (The Falklands are Argentine), was shown by players including former Tottenham Hotspur attacker Giovani Lo Celso after Lionel Messi inspired a comeback against the Three Lions.

Sanctions after final defeat

The 2022 winners went on to lose the final after Ferran Torres' extra-time winner for Spain. Following that defeat, FIFA sanctioned Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, Roberto Ayala and Pablo Martin Paez Gavira over ugly scenes after the match.

The governing body's punishment includes fines for the Argentine Football Association and bans for the named players, though the specific lengths of the bans have not been disclosed.
