Antiques Roadshow Guest Stunned by Charity Shop Brooch Value

An Antiques Roadshow guest was left gobsmacked after discovering the true value of a brooch she bought for just £2.50 at a charity shop. The episode, hosted by Fiona Bruce, took place at an antiques fair in Thirlestane Castle.

Charity Shop Find Turns Out to Be Valuable

The guest explained that she had picked up the brooch from a charity shop, suspecting it was more than just costume jewellery. She said: "It didn't feel like costume jewellery. Costume jewellery feels very light. The clasp was broken when I brought it so I took that to a jewellers and asked if he'd mend the clasp. He did. I asked if it was worth anything. He said, 'not really, but if you're selling it, then I'll buy it for £50.' I thought if he wants to buy it for £50, it's probably worth a little bit more."

Expert Valuation Reveals Surprising Worth

Expert Susan Rumfitt examined the brooch and identified sapphires and diamonds set in gold and silver. She dated it to around 1870-1880, describing it as a romantic piece with two entwined hearts. Despite the lack of a maker's mark, Rumfitt valued the brooch at £2,000 to £3,000 at auction.
