The new Hulu documentary The Swan: Behind the Mirror, directed by Erin Lee Carr, reveals the harsh reality behind the 2004 Fox reality show The Swan, where 32 women endured extreme plastic surgery, isolation, and a hidden pageant, according to interviews with former contestants and producers.
The original show, which ran for two seasons in 2004, brought the spectacle of intensive plastic surgery to US living rooms, featuring bandages, bruises, and surgical procedures. Developed by former Telemundo executive Nely Galán, the show was an extreme outgrowth of the era's fascination with celebrity bodies, as shown in an early montage that includes Lindsay Lohan's figure analyzed on the evening news and Anna Nicole Smith bragging about diet pills.
Contestants' experiences revealed
The film focuses on what the women endured, with contestants and producers revealing that much of what was shown on TV was not accurate. Contestants were isolated from friends and family, with no mirrors present during filming. They were given little choice in procedures, which included rhinoplasties, breast augmentations, and veneers, sometimes undergoing up to six surgeries in 10 hours of anesthesia.
There was virtually no recovery time; women were required to be in the gym within days, on a strict diet of no more than 1,200 calories a day, which was halved by the second season. "I think they had to dehumanize us because, ultimately, we were just a job," says Beth, a first-season participant, in the film.
Hidden pageant and backlash
The women were not informed until after surgery that there would be a pageant, including a lingerie portion and swimsuit competition. "I don't think the pageant was ever a part of the original format," Carr said. The show engendered intense backlash, and viewership fell off in the second season, ending the show before 2005.
Despite the trauma, most women say they do not regret participating, if only to meet each other. The film ends with a reunion of the contestants. "The healing and the joy that comes from a group of women understanding each other is profound," Carr said. The Swan: Behind The Mirror is streaming now on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ in the UK and Australia.
