A "hot" and "steamy" period drama has been lauded by film fans for its "beautiful cinematography," the chemistry between its lead stars, and the "next level" acting on offer throughout.
A New Period Drama for Netflix Enthusiasts
There is no shortage of options for Netflix subscribers looking for their next period piece to enjoy, with top favourite TV shows including the likes of Downton Abbey, Bridgerton, The Crown, and many more.
For film buffs, the 2019 Timothée Chalamet royal-court history drama The King is regularly praised, as well as Sofia Coppola's 2006 cult classic Marie Antoinette, Greta Gerwig's star-studded 2019 adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, among countless others.
Lady Chatterley's Lover: A Steamy Romance
If you are craving some intense romance and "steamy" scenes, one Netflix offering may scratch that itch: the 2022 film adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's controversial literary phenomenon, Lady Chatterley's Lover.
The novel was first privately published in 1928 and instantly raised eyebrows for its explicit exploration of female pleasure, sexual intimacy, and use of profanity. For decades, it was banned in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, and India.
The book has been the subject of many film and TV adaptations. The 2022 film stars Emma Corrin as the eponymous Lady Constance Chatterley and Jack O'Connell as Oliver, the lower-class gamekeeper with whom Lady Chatterley embarks on a passionate affair. It was directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, with the screenplay written by David Magee.
Most of the scenes were filmed at the mansion and on the grounds of the Brynkinalt estate in Chirk, North Wales, in early 2022. Lake Vyrnwy and Corris in mid Wales were also used for some scenes.
Plot and Reception
The story follows Lady Chatterley, who begins an affair after her husband returns from the war paralysed, bitter, and angry about his new circumstances. The Chatterleys' marriage becomes loveless and strained, with Lady Chatterley struggling with her husband's controlling tendencies, temper, and lack of any form of physical or emotional intimacy.
The film has earned an impressive 87% score on popular review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.
Fan and Critic Praise
One fan said: "Excellent adaptation of the novel! Great performances, and beautiful cinematography."
Another agreed: "Loved the romance and heartbreak!"
A third said: "Absolutely unreal film!! Acting is absolutely next level!!"
While a fourth wrote: "This is an incredibly beautiful version of the film. There is such chemistry between the two actors. I loved the raw passion between them. A very hot and steamy film."
Someone else was keen to praise the lead actors: "Corrin and O'Connell have great chemistry, bringing to life an otherwise traditional tale of forbidden love."
Another fan said: "The best version of Lady Chatterley's Lover that I've seen. It not only captures the steamy passion of the illicit affair really well (credit to both leading actors for some very convincing sex scenes) but expertly puts it into the class-ridden social context of the period."
One thought it "was going to be like Downton Abbey" and got "quite a shock" at the steamy scenes. They added: "Can't believe I watched this with my nan. She loved it though."
While a critic said: "A terrific showcase for the increasingly impressive Corrin, this Bridgerton-meets-Downton should rightly prove to be a hit for Netflix."
Lady Chatterley's Lover is available to stream on Netflix.
