Meghan Markle is “trying to carve out a solo career” away from Prince Harry, according to commentator Carole Malone, who claimed the Duchess of Sussex may be deliberately distancing herself from her husband professionally.
The comments were made during the first episode of Royals Unscripted, the Daily Express’s new weekly video podcast delivering exclusive news, commentary and in-depth analysis on the Royal Family. Hosted by Express Royal Editor Emily Ferguson and Carole Malone, the 30-minute episodes go live every Thursday at 7am.
Paris Fashion Week speculation
The pair discussed Meghan’s potential reappearance at Paris Fashion Week after she attended last year, as well as her recent appearances away from Harry and the couple’s decision to spend more time in Britain. Malone suggested Meghan’s potential return to Paris could represent an attempt to establish herself independently from the Duke of Sussex.
She claimed: “She's trying to carve out a solo career for herself. She doesn't want the appendage that is Harry and all the bad publicity that comes with him.
“And if you think about the last year, there aren't that many things we've seen her at with him. He's done lots of solo engagements, but she hasn't. So I suspect that they're moving away from each other as a couple.”
Professional distance
Malone added: “It wouldn't surprise me if that was both personal and professional. But certainly professionally, she doesn't want to be associated with all the stuff that goes with him.
“All the bad publicity about the numerous court cases, all the bad publicity about his outbursts, the stuff he says, not just about the press, but about everything. So she's steering away, which is an odd thing to do from your husband, I think.”
Ferguson said she had spoken to a spokesperson about it to ask if Meghan was planning on attending this year's Paris Fashion Week but he said it was the first they had heard of the suggestion.
Return to the UK
Last month, Meghan, Harry and their two children made a surprise return to the UK, and announced plans to live in Britain for an “extended” period. Their children are now being schooled in Britain. They arrived back in the UK on August 26, landing at Birmingham Airport after six years of living in Montecito, California.
