Royal fans have spotted a touching nod to Princess Diana in Kate Middleton's outfit at Trooping the Colour. The Princess of Wales, 44, looked stunning in a powder blue dress by Catherine Walker, paired with an oversized Philip Treacy hat and her favourite pearl earrings.
A Familiar Shade of Blue
Observers quickly noted the resemblance to outfits worn by Princess Diana. On X, one commentator wrote: "A nod from Kate to her late mother-in-law at today's Trooping the Colour. The Princess of Wales is wearing a pale blue outfit designed by Catherine Walker, a designer often worn by Princess Diana. Today also marks 45 years since Diana attended her first Trooping the Colour."
Another viewer added: "Fashion goes full circle to 1987. Two Princesses of Wales, one classic Catherine Walker coat dress."
Comparison with Diana's Style
Both princesses wore a similar shade of blue with white piping. Diana debuted a similar style at an Easter service in 1987 with Prince William and nephew Peter Phillips, and again in 1992 with a Philip Somerville hat.
Powder blue has long been a royal favourite. Historically, blue pigments from lapis lazuli were reserved for royalty. While navy conveys authority, powder blue offers "soft power," allowing royal women to appear both dignified and approachable.
Trooping the Colour Tradition
Trooping the Colour, or the Sovereign's Birthday Parade, is held annually in June. The tradition began under King Charles II but was moved to June by King Edward VII for better weather. King Charles, born in November, celebrates his official birthday at this event.
The parade took place at Horse Guards Parade in London, with thousands lining the Mall. The King's Company, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, trooped their colour, and the Royal Family later watched a Royal Air Force flypast from Buckingham Palace balcony.
