Passengers on an EasyJet flight were moved to tears after the pilot made an emotional announcement before take-off. The plane was preparing to depart for Nice Côte d'Azur when the captain shared a message that left many on board visibly emotional.
Surprise announcement for Lucy
Among those travelling was Lucy, whose friends had secretly arranged a surprise to celebrate her being cancer-free. One of the group had handed a short letter to cabin crew member Felix, asking him to pass it to the pilot.
Before take-off, the captain used the intercom to share Lucy's good health news with the rest of the passengers and wish her and her friends a fantastic holiday.
The pilot said: "Just really happy to share that one of our customers, Lucy, who's flying us today - she's just beaten breast cancer, which for us all - I'm sure if you know her, you'll know that, but I think that's awesome.
"I really wish Lucy and your friends, uh, have a fantastic holiday and continue to enjoy your life. So, thanks, that's great news."
Lucy's cancer journey
Lucy was visibly overwhelmed with emotion following the announcement as she covered her face while in her seat. She said: "The cancer free holiday makes it out of the group chat. Now we're campaigning to make more people check their chest!"
Lucy discovered she had breast cancer at the age of 27 after noticing a lump in her left breast. A month later, the lump remained and she underwent an ultrasound, which medical professionals described as looking "highly sus".
Lucy subsequently had a mammogram and biopsy, receiving her breast cancer diagnosis just a week afterwards. As she was living in China at the time of her diagnosis, she was advised to return to the UK within two days to begin treatment, which comprised chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy and surgery involving a lumpectomy and lymph node removal.
Cancer-free and raising awareness
Following the completion of her treatment, Lucy was officially declared cancer-free, a full year after her initial diagnosis. Throughout her journey, Lucy documented her experiences on TikTok, building a following of more than a thousand people.
To this day, she continues to champion breast cancer awareness and urges women to check their breasts on a regular basis.
Symptoms of breast cancer in women
According to the NHS, symptoms of breast cancer in women may include a lump, or swelling in your breast, chest or armpit, a change in the skin of your breast, such as dimpling (may look or feel like orange peel), a change in the colour of the skin on your breast – on black or brown skin it may look darker than usual, on white skin it may look red or a change in size or shape of one or both breasts.
Other symptoms include nipple discharge (if you are not pregnant or breastfeeding), which may have blood in it, and a change in the shape or look of your nipple, such as it turning inwards (inverted nipple) or a rash on it (may look like eczema). Some people may experience pain in their breast or armpit alongside these symptoms - though you can have these symptoms without any pain. Breast pain on its own is not typically a symptom of breast cancer.
