Corrie star Amy Robbins' real-life marriage to co-star

Amy Robbins, who plays Christina Boyd in Coronation Street, is married to fellow actor Robert Daws, a familiar face from shows including Death in Paradise and Holby City. The couple met while working together on the ITV medical drama The Royal, where Amy played Dr Jill Weatherill and Robert played her on-screen husband, Dr Gordon.

Romance written into the plot

Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph, Amy revealed that their real-life romance was written into the show's storyline. She said: “We met on the job, so to speak, and we were married by the end of the first series. And because we were married in real life, they wrote it into the plot of the show.”

Robert added: “We pretty much honeymooned on set, didn’t we? Did we get a honeymoon, actually? Didn’t we have about four days off between episode seven and eight?” Amy confirmed: “We did indeed. And we’ve been married 13 years now.”

Family life and career highlights

Amy and Robert are parents to two daughters, Elizabeth and May. Robert portrayed Tuppy Glossop in ITV's comedy Jeeves and Wooster from 1990 to 1993 and also appeared on Coronation Street in 2010, playing Tom Hughes.

Amy has also spoken about her difficult first childbirth experience, describing it as distressing. She told the publication: "It was a nightmare. I remember going into the labour ward and thinking I'd gone into hell and all these women were being tortured." She added: "I had to have an emergency cesarean after being induced. And because of complications, I had to have a lot of surgery afterward to sort everything out. It was very frightening and exceptionally painful."

Robert previously reflected on their romance in an interview with OK! in 2008, recalling: “We joined [the Royals] at the same time and met each other on the first read-through. We sat next to each other, and apparently, I totally ignored Amy and spent my whole time talking to an actress on my left!” He added: “I think it was six months before we became seriously involved, and then we were married within the year! It was quite an interesting year – a new job, a marriage, and a baby at the end of it.”

Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
