Blue Lights is officially returning for a fourth series. The Belfast-set and filmed drama is making its comeback with the entire main cast reprising their roles, including Richard Dormer from series one, who returns as Gerry Cliff.
Series four will resume six months following the events of series three, with constables Grace Ellis, portrayed by Sian Brooke, Tommy Foster, portrayed by Nathan Braniff, and Annie Conlon, portrayed by Katherine Devlin, working at breaking point while confronting a fresh danger on the streets that law enforcement can scarcely manage.
The series will also explore the murder trial of Gerry Cliff, who met his demise in series one, revealing a perilous and deeply concealed secret that triggers turmoil within the police force and throughout the criminal underworld. Richard Dormer returns as Gerry Cliff
Richard Dormer is reprising his role as Gerry Cliff, despite the character's death in series one. He will feature in flashback sequences as series four examines his murder trial.
Audiences will recognise Richard from Sky Atlantic's Fortitude, as Dan Anderssen, and Game of Thrones, where he portrayed Beric Dondarrion in the HBO television series. He has maintained a busy schedule since departing Blue Lights in 2023, appearing in The Day of the Jackal, Gangs of London, and The Assassin.
Richard returns alongside Hannah McClean (Malpractice) as solicitor Jen Robinson, and Jonathan Harden (The Rainmaker, Time) as disgraced former Inspector Jonty, in an episode set to address significant questions from the past.
Grace Ellis and Stevie Neil's storylines
Sian reprises her role as Grace Ellis in season four. Having sat her detective exams, viewers will discover whether she passed or not. Sian is best known for her roles as Barbara Napier in The Undeclared War and Karen Newman in Trying. She has also appeared in Cape Wrath, Sherlock, Doctor Foster, Good Omens, Guilt, and House of the Dragon.
Martin returns as Stevie Neil. Discussing where his character stands at the beginning of season four, Martin said: "Stevie is settled and happy with Grace. They're living together, and on the surface, life is good. But Stevie is starting to question where he fits within policing and, more fundamentally, what impact he can actually have."
Martin is widely recognised for portraying Eamonn Lavery in Trespasses and John Shagan in Hostage. He has also featured in Say Nothing, Marcella, and The Frankenstein Chronicles.
Annie Conlon and Tommy Foster's challenges
Katherine makes her return as fan favourite Annie in season four. As the series opens, Annie finds herself involved in policing the aftermath of a violent attack on a migrant centre.
Speaking about her character's circumstances, Katherine said: "Annie continues to grapple with the grief of losing her mother. There's no stop button when it comes to the grieving process. While that loss remains a constant undercurrent throughout the series, there is also the flicker of romance as feelings begin to rekindle between Annie and Shane."
Katherine is most recognised for portraying Annie in Blue Lights, though she has also appeared in The Day Of The Jackal and Vikings.
Nathan returns as Tommy Foster. Discussing his character's position in series four, Nathan said: "The job is incredibly demanding, and he's struggling to balance its pressures with challenges in his personal life. It's taking a toll on him, and he's finding things difficult. It's fair to say he's struggling."
Nathan has portrayed Tommy throughout Blue Lights' run, appearing in all four series since 2023, marking his debut and sole television role to date.
Sandra Cliff's origin story and full cast
Andi reprises her role as Sandra Cliff. Series four will delve into her background through the Gerry Cliff murder trial.
She said: "Essentially, it's going to be their origin story, but also reveal much more about why Gerry is the man he is and what motivated his actions in season one. It'll also reveal the significance the McIntyres played in Gerry's past and their relevance to Sandra's present situation."
Andi is recognised for her roles in The Sandman, I May Destroy You, Line of Duty, Breeders, and Payback. She previously appeared as Nicky Bowman in the Netflix hit Sex Education.
The fourth series of Blue Lights also features Frank Blake (Say Nothing, Normal People) as Shane, Joanne Crawford (Outlander: Blood of my Blood) as Helen, Abigail McGibbon (Sadie, Ballywalter) as Tina, Dearbháile McKinney (Blue Lights S1-4) as Aisling, Neil Keery (How To Get To Heaven From Belfast) as McCloskey and Andrea Irvine (Call The Midwife) as Nicola.
Returning cast members include Cathy Tyson (Dune: Prophecy, Black Ops), portraying private members club proprietor Dana Morgan, and Michael Smiley (Bad Sisters, Censor) as C3 intelligence officer Paul 'Colly' Collins.
Blue Lights season four returns to BBC One on Tuesday, September 29 at 9pm.
