Blair Drummond Safari Park has unveiled a new lion house and a unique 'Breakfast with the Lions' experience, offering visitors an unprecedented close-up view of one of the park's most iconic species. The new facility was officially opened today by Heart Scotland DJs Adele Cunningham and David Farrell, who were the first to sample the special breakfast.
VIP Viewing Room Offers Close Encounters
The centrepiece of the experience is a VIP viewing room, styled to resemble a luxury safari tent. It features two large, reinforced glass windows—one looking directly into the lions' den and the other overlooking the outdoor reserve. Guests can enjoy breakfast just feet away from the animals, watching them begin their day in their habitat.
The DJs swapped the studio for the safari park, getting closer to the lions than most people ever will. They participated in a tong-feeding experience, giving them an up-close encounter with the pride.
Behind-the-Scenes Access and Animal Care
The 'Breakfast with the Lions' experience includes early access behind the scenes. Guests have the opportunity to feed the lions under keeper guidance as part of their training and care routine. They can also help prepare enrichment for the lions' morning by hiding food in their indoor house. Breakfast is then served in the VIP room while guests observe the lions.
The new lion house has been designed with animal welfare at its core. It is significantly larger than the park's previous lion building, providing improved flexibility for managing the pride, including the ability to safely mix and separate individuals when required.
Quotes from Attendees and Management
Speaking at the opening, Adele Cunningham said: "I've had some unusual breakfast invitations over the years, but sharing breakfast with lions is definitely a first. Getting so close to the lions and seeing the work that goes on behind the scenes was incredible, and the new viewing room gives visitors a really unique perspective on these amazing animals."
Hector Muir, Managing Director at Blair Drummond Safari Park, said: "Lions have been at the heart of Blair Drummond Safari Park for more than 50 years, so opening a brand-new lion house is a hugely important moment for us. The 'Breakfast with the Lions' experience gives guests the rare opportunity to feed the lions under keeper supervision while learning about their care, training and enrichment as part of their daily routine."
