BBC unveils The Last Detectives starring Lewis Jones and Rhodri

The BBC has shared first-look images for The Last Detectives, a new crime drama set in the coastal town of Tenby, starring Mark Lewis Jones and Steffan Rhodri. The broadcaster describes the series as a "twisty" show, with each case unfolding over two episodes.

Cast and characters

Mark Lewis Jones, known for Baby Reindeer and The Crown, plays DI Glyn Walsh. Steffan Rhodri, whose credits include Steeltown Murders and Death Valley, takes on the role of DS Sion Dearden. The pair are long-standing friends and partners who, despite personal hardships, find renewed purpose as they work to solve baffling murders across South Wales.

Also starring are Jordan Davies as DC Neil Miller, Bethan Mary-James as DC Remy Jones, and Julie Graham as forensic biologist Pamela Thomas.

Plot and setting

The story begins when DI Glyn Walsh returns early from bereavement leave. He and DS Sion Dearden investigate the murder of a respected university professor, a case that leads them into the local university's underworld. Later episodes feature the poisoning of a head teacher who drowns while wild swimming, and a case of mistaken identity during a triathlon.

Throughout the series, the detectives manage both their professional partnership and their home life under one roof. The show is described as filled with wit and humour, centring on two detectives discovering a fresh start after circumstances force them together.

Production details

The six-episode series is produced by Quay Street Productions for BBC iPlayer and BBC One, in a co-commission with BBC Cymru Wales. It is written, created and executive produced by Matthew Barry, whose previous work includes Men Up and The Guest. Hannah Daniel wrote episode 4.

Filming took place in Tenby, Cardiff and across the South Wales coastline, with support from Welsh Government through Creative Wales. Barry said: "I'm beyond excited to be re-teaming with Quay Street and the BBC to bring The Last Detectives to the screen. It's a story about finding friendship and meaning in later life, through the lens of a thrilling police procedural. I can't wait for audiences to fall in love with Sion, Glyn and the stunning backdrop of Tenby."

The release date for The Last Detectives has not yet been announced.
