TIFF Removes Hamas Documentary From Lineup

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has withdrawn its invitation for the documentary The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue, directed by Canadian filmmaker Barry Avrich. The film follows retired Israel Defense Forces General Noam Tibon on a mission to rescue his family during the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, and also covers his efforts to save survivors of a music festival massacre and wounded Israeli soldiers.

A TIFF spokesperson stated that the invitation was withdrawn because the film did not meet general requirements, including legal clearance of all footage. The festival cited a need to protect itself from legal implications and manage risks around a film about highly sensitive subject matter, including potential disruption. TIFF's terms allow disqualification of any film that, in its sole discretion, would not be in the festival's best interest.

The filmmakers expressed shock and sadness, accusing TIFF of censoring its own programming. They emphasised that film should stimulate debate and that a festival should let audiences decide what to watch. They plan to release the film independently and invite broadcasters and streamers to view it.

Sources indicate that TIFF was concerned about disruptive protests, similar to last year's controversy over the documentary Russians at War, which faced calls for cancellation from Ukrainian diplomats. In that case, TIFF initially halted screenings but later showed the film with heavy security.

The filmmakers had complied with some requests, including changing the film's title from Out of Nowhere: The Ultimate Rescue. However, TIFF required editorial changes to identify the source of Hamas-livestreamed footage and provide legal clearance documentation. Despite providing an errors and omissions insurance letter and agreeing to security measures, the filmmakers refused to withdraw the film after a request from TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey, leading to the official uninvitation.
