Ashley Roberts Criticises David Haye's 'Outrageous' I'm A Celebrity Behaviour
Ashley Roberts has publicly called out her I'm A Celebrity… South Africa co-star David Haye, describing his language as "outrageous" and expressing surprise at seeing a "different side" to the former boxer. Both celebrities are currently competing in the pre-recorded all-stars series, filmed last year, to be crowned Legend of the Jungle.
Controversial Remarks Spark Viewer Backlash
Since the show began airing, David Haye has faced significant criticism from viewers for a series of contentious comments. Earlier this week, he raised eyebrows by claiming his girlfriend Sian possessed the personality of "an ugly bird". He elaborated on this by discussing what he termed "Ugly Duckling syndrome", suggesting that less attractive women develop stronger personalities to compensate, while very attractive women may not need to cultivate such traits.
More recently, Haye was criticised for appearing ungrateful after dismissing chocolates secretly brought into camp by fellow contestant Adam Thomas as "horrible". These incidents have led to accusations of sexism and poor conduct from some audience members.
Roberts' Surprise at Haye's Attitude
Discussing his behaviour on Heart Radio Breakfast, Ashley Roberts shared her astonishment with hosts Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston. "He’s not coming across well, is he? His language is outrageous, I’ll tell you that much," she stated. Roberts emphasised that she does not recall this aspect of Haye's personality from when they first appeared together on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2012.
"I don’t remember that side of him when we were together 14 years ago. I don't remember thinking, ‘What just came out of your mouth?'" she added. Reflecting on their previous friendship, where they both reached the final three—with Haye placing third and Roberts second—she noted, "We spent time together after the show. I don't remember being taken aback [by his words back then]."
Other Camp Developments and a Humorous Blunder
Elsewhere in the camp this week, comedian Seann Walsh became the first celebrity to be eliminated in a surprise twist. Former football manager Harry Redknapp was tasked with delivering the eviction news but made a humorous mistake by accidentally calling Walsh "Stuart".
Ashley Roberts explained the moment: "Poor Harry! This wasn’t aired, he came in trying to explain what was going on and looked over to the right, where we had all our names on a chalkboard with our chores, which me and Scarlett [Moffatt] had just erased. So, it looked like he was searching for help to remember Seann's name, and then he said ‘Stuart’. He looked at Seann and Seann was like, 'Okay, I guess that’s me'."
I’m A Celebrity… South Africa airs weekdays at 9pm on ITV and ITVX, with the live final scheduled for April 24.
