Antiques Roadshow Guest Stunned by Value of Tea Set Locked in Attic for 80 Years
Antiques Roadshow: Tea Set Valued at £2,500 After 80 Years in Attic

An Antiques Roadshow guest was left stunned after learning the true value of a Chinese tea set that had been locked away in an attic for 80 years. The episode, filmed at the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, featured expert Serhat Ahmet examining the item.

Unopened Box Reveals Hidden Treasure

Serhat Ahmet was presented with a seemingly ordinary green box, which he described as intriguing. Upon opening it, he gasped, discovering a complete Chinese tea set. The guest explained that the set belonged to a relative named Margaret, who died at age 94, and had been stored in the attic for decades.

History of the Tea Set

The guest shared that Margaret's father, a merchant navy captain, purchased the set in Shanghai as a gift. It featured Margaret's initials engraved on the box and was wrapped in factory paper from Lee Wah Porcelain Co Ltd on Nanking Road, Shanghai. The set also included a 1947 Chinese newspaper, preserved as wrapping.

Expert Valuation

Ahmet noted the vibrant ruby-colored glaze, green silk lining, and sgraffito decoration of Qing dragons. He described it as high-end teaware from that period, valuing it between £1,500 and £2,500. The guest, who had expected only £100, was left speechless, exclaiming, "Are you serious? That's outrageous!"

The episode is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
