Vernon Kay has shared an emotional family update with his BBC Radio 2 listeners, announcing he will be taking time off from his presenting duties to accompany his youngest daughter to university open days.
Family Milestone
The 52-year-old broadcaster, who recently announced his separation from wife Tess Daly after nearly 23 years of marriage, revealed that their 17-year-old daughter Amber is preparing to attend university in September 2027. Vernon will be taking Friday off to visit campuses with her.
During his show, Vernon asked listeners about their weekend plans before mentioning major events like the Isle of Wight Festival. He then explained: "I'm not in tomorrow. I'm having Friday off. Because I'm going to university open days. I think the time is right for me to step away from broadcasting and go back into further education."
He quickly clarified with a joke: "No, I'm joking. I'm taking our youngest to open days around universities and I'm really looking forward to it. It's an exciting time in life, and also I get to hold her hand."
Vernon added: "Do you know what I mean? Not necessarily on the campuses but walking around whatever town we're going to. So sweet."
Tess and Vernon also have an older daughter, Phoebe, who is 21.
Recent Challenges
The announcement comes after a difficult period for Vernon, who was recently reprimanded on air by a colleague for failing to notice her new hairstyle. Producer Janine Maya-Smith called him and the team "naughty boys" for not complimenting her look.
Vernon apologised, saying: "I should've known, I live in a house full of ladies, do you know what I mean? I should've known. I apologise Janice, it was a rookie error, it was a big mistake Janice-Janine, you look fabulous, my love."
Vernon and Tess confirmed their amicable separation in a joint statement in May. The couple and their daughters live in a six-bedroom property in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, and it remains unclear if either plans to move.
