Clean Orchids with Lemon Juice for Longer Summer Blooms
Clean Orchids with Lemon Juice for Longer Blooms

Orchids are celebrated for their enduring blooms, but during summer, a common oversight can hinder their growth and flowering. Dust accumulation on orchid leaves can block sunlight, depriving the plant of essential energy. Clare, a houseplant enthusiast and creator of My Orchid Diary, recommends a simple solution: lemon juice.

Why Dust Harms Orchids

In summer, drier air and open windows allow more dust to settle indoors. Orchids, with their large leaves, are particularly susceptible. Dusty leaves reduce light absorption, stunting growth and bloom production.

The Lemon Juice Solution

Clare explains: “Dampen a cotton disc or paper towel with lemon juice, wipe the top of the leaf, and let it dry. If juice gets into the crown, absorb it with a paper towel.” Lemon juice’s mild acidity breaks down sticky dust without harsh scrubbing, which can stress orchids. Its antibacterial properties also help prevent infections from bacteria, mould, or fungi.

Many plant owners favour this method as it leaves leaves glossy and shiny. It is an old-fashioned, cost-free technique that supports summer flowering.

How to Clean Orchids Properly

  • Mix lemon juice with lukewarm water.
  • Dip a soft cloth in the solution and gently wipe the leaves.
  • Place your hand under the leaf to prevent tearing or bending.
  • Wipe from the front base to the tip in one direction, avoiding scrubbing or excessive pressure.
  • Orchids lack a waxy protective layer, so handle with care and wipe no more than twice.
  • Dry leaves with kitchen paper towels to prevent rot or pest attraction.

This monthly cleaning routine is one of the best ways to keep orchids healthy in summer, ensuring longer-lasting flowers.
