Airdrie Mum Submits Dissertation Days Before Baby Birth

Ashley Fraser, 35, a BA (Hons) English studies graduate from Airdrie, submitted her University of Stirling dissertation on March 28, 10 days before the birth of her son Cooper and ahead of her April 15 deadline.

Balancing Pregnancy and Studies

Determined to stay ahead of schedule, Ashley balanced pregnancy, family life and her studies, supported by her dissertation supervisor, Professor Scott Hames. Cooper was first in line to congratulate his mum as they celebrated on campus.

Speaking after graduating, Ashley said: "I had to be ahead of the game with my research, planning and writing. With two very close deadlines looming, I had no time to waste getting my dissertation submitted before a huge life change. Sleepless nights of essay writing have been swapped for night feeds and nappy changes."

Access Programme Success

A mature student who joined Stirling through an access programme, Ashley credits the university with helping her believe in herself and achieve goals she once thought were out of reach. She now plans to spend time with her family before pursuing a PGDE and working towards a career in prison education.

University Graduation Ceremonies

Professor Sir Gerry McCormac, principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Stirling, said: "Summer graduation is always a highlight in the university calendar and we are proud to recognise the hard work and academic achievements of our students and staff." In total, 1650 students will graduate from the University of Stirling this week, with four ceremonies held across two days (June 24-25).
