Bridgend County Borough Council has approved plans for a new Welsh-medium seedling school in Porthcawl. The plans were given the green light at a planning committee meeting in July. The new facility will be located within the boundary of the existing Porthcawl Primary School.
The development includes a car park, external play space, and two all-weather pitches for use by the primary school. The existing site is accessed from Meadow Lane, while the new seedling school will be accessed from Pant Morfa.
Proposed Facilities and Staffing
The report stated: "The proposal is to build a new facility that includes a small school and childcare provision, offering 30 nursery places and 30 reception places, along with childcare for babies and young children from birth to school age. It will provide 16 full-time childcare places (or 32 part-time), plus six places specifically for children aged zero to two and will also offer after-school and holiday care so children can be looked after throughout the day and year."
All care and education will be delivered in the Welsh language. Approximately eight to ten full-time staff will be employed at the site once running at full capacity.
Objections and Approval
There were no objections from statutory consultees, but four letters of objection were received from residents. Concerns included potential loss of residential amenity, increased traffic, and overload of local drainage.
Councillors at the meeting approved the plans unanimously, in line with officers' recommendations. Separate plans for a new 420-place replacement primary school in Kenfig Hill were also approved.
