A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a teacher was assaulted at Milford Haven Comprehensive School in Pembrokeshire. The incident, which prompted a lockdown at the school, occurred at approximately 3.20pm on Thursday.
Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed that the teacher was assaulted by a pupil who was 'brandishing a weapon', but did not suffer a 'stab injury'. The teacher has since been discharged from hospital and is being supported by specialist officers. All other pupils returned home unharmed.
The school will remain closed on Friday on health and safety grounds, according to the council's website. Police have said there will be a higher than usual presence in the area over the coming days to provide reassurance.
Wales' First Minister, Eluned Morgan, expressed her deep concern over the incident, stating that 'violence of any kind has no place in our schools'. She had visited the school only last week. Teaching unions have also raised concerns about increasing levels of violence in schools, with Neil Butler of the NASUWT describing the incident as 'frightening'.
Superintendent Chris Neve of Dyfed-Powys Police reassured parents that swift action was taken to safeguard pupils and teachers. The 15-year-old suspect remains in police custody.
