Kentucky Teacher and Coach Faces Serious Charges After Student Allegations

A married Kentucky teacher and assistant soccer coach has been arrested following allegations of sending nude photographs to a high school student and engaging in sexual contact. Mary 'Hanna' Mattingly, a 31-year-old permanent substitute teacher at Bardstown High School, was taken into custody on Monday morning around 10:30 am.

Charges and Investigation Details

Mattingly faces two serious charges: sexual abuse and procuring or promoting the use of a minor by electronic means. According to police statements, she "engaged in sexual contact with a high school student" and sent "multiple partially nude photographs" of herself to the teenager. The investigation began after Bardstown City Schools received an anonymous letter detailing alleged inappropriate conduct between a female substitute teacher and a student.

Bardstown police detective Eric Williamson confirmed that investigators "followed up with information from the letter" and verified some of its content. The relationship between Mattingly and the student had reportedly lasted for several months before authorities intervened.

School Response and Administrative Actions

Upon receiving the anonymous letter, school officials immediately placed Mattingly on administrative leave and contacted law enforcement. Bardstown City Schools superintendent Ryan Clark confirmed that Mattingly worked as a permanent substitute teacher at the high school and also served as an assistant girls' soccer coach.

The school district issued a statement saying they learned of Mattingly's arrest on the day it occurred: "On Monday, March 30th we learned that Mary Mattingly was arrested and charged by the Bardstown Police Department. We are unable to comment any further due to this being a personnel matter and an active investigation." The district emphasized that they take all reports seriously and investigate them thoroughly.

Legal Proceedings and Police Statements

Following her arrest, Mattingly was taken to the Nelson County Correctional Center. She posted a $20,000 bond on Tuesday and is scheduled to be arraigned on April 7. Police stressed that the investigation remains ongoing, with authorities waiting for forensic results to return and continuing to conduct interviews.

Detective Williamson emphasized the importance of community tips in such cases: "Somebody was concerned about an inappropriate relationship. The only way they thought they could let somebody know was an anonymous letter. Look what it has yielded." He added that Bardstown police would not "tolerate this type of stuff in the community" and stated firmly, "This should not happen. This should not be a concern when you send your kids off to school."

Personal Background and Ongoing Investigation

Despite the serious allegations, social media photos showed Mattingly alongside her husband Keith Mattingly, 33. A friend's post described her as "by far one of the BEST mothers I know." Police confirmed that Mattingly used social media to communicate with the teenager and send explicit pictures.

While authorities believe there are no additional victims at this time, the investigation continues. The Bardstown Police Department has demonstrated their commitment to following up on public tips regarding inappropriate relationships between educators and students. The case highlights the serious consequences of such misconduct within educational environments.
