Two schools in Stockport are set to be demolished and rebuilt after planning permission was granted, with millions of pounds of investment from the Department for Education. The redevelopment aims to tackle issues caused by ageing buildings that are at the end of their lifespan.
Approval and Background
At a Stockport Council planning committee meeting on August 13, plans for Moorfield Primary School and Bramhall High School were approved unanimously. The projects are part of a wider effort to modernize school facilities.
Bramhall High School was forced to close in 2023 after dangerous reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) was found. This type of concrete is prone to sudden unexpected collapse. The school reopened after safety measures were implemented, but parts remain sectioned off, and students and staff have been using temporary classrooms.
Public Support and Concerns
Public feedback for the Bramhall plans showed 86 per cent support, with 4 per cent against. Objections included construction impact, parking problems, and increased outdoor social areas. For Moorfield, some neighbours opposed the plans, claiming the restoration of a green field is 'physically impossible'. The site is intended for use as a temporary car park during construction.
Councillor Shan Alexander acknowledged there would be 'bumps and hiccups' but said 'at the end of the day it will be a great asset to the community, to Bramhall, and to Stockport'. She added that 'a brand new school has been long awaited in Bramhall'.
Impact and Timeline
Councillor Dean Fitzpatrick praised the investment, saying: “I think it’s great to see that we’re getting investment in schools, supporting children and young people in Stockport.” However, he raised concerns about disruption, stating: “It will benefit the community when it’s done but during that time, it can be quite painful.”
Construction for Bramhall High School is expected to start in 2028, with Moorfield Primary School expected to be finished by 2029. The new schools are seen as a 'once in a generation opportunity to create a state-of-the-art learning environment'.
