Thousands of pupils across the UK will discover how they fared in their GCSE examinations this morning (Thursday, August 20) as results day finally arrives. Students will learn their grades when they return to their schools to collect their results from 8am.
This follows thousands of sixth-form students receiving their A-level results last week, learning what the next three years of their lives will hold. Students who completed alternative qualifications, such as BTEC First, Technical and Tech Awards, will also receive their results at the same time as GCSE pupils.
Grading System and Entry Requirements
In England, GCSE examinations are now assessed using a numerical grading system ranging from 9 to 1, rather than the former A* to G scale – with 9 representing the highest achievable grade. A grade 7 or above is broadly equivalent to an A or above, while a grade 4 or above – deemed a "standard pass" – is broadly equivalent to a C or above.
Students are encouraged to contact their chosen school or college to enquire about flexibility on entry requirements should they have narrowly missed their target grades.
