Pupil Dies After Medical Emergency at South Shields School

A pupil has tragically died after emergency services were called to St Wilfrid's RC College in South Shields on Tuesday morning. Police and ambulance crews, including the Great North Air Ambulance Service, arrived at the school shortly after 9:15 am following reports of a medical incident.

Northumbria Police and paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service remained at the scene throughout the morning, and access to the immediate area was restricted while the incident was managed. The school confirmed that the significant emergency response was due to a medical episode involving an individual on site.

Headteacher Catherine Lennox said in a statement: “Sadly the student involved has passed away. Our entire school community is deeply saddened, and we will continue to come together to support one another at this incredibly difficult time.” She added that the school had taken the difficult decision to close for the rest of the day.

Lennox also asked for the family’s privacy to be respected and said the school would update families later on arrangements for the following day. The school community has been urged to hold the family in their thoughts and prayers as they endure this profound loss.
