Millions of students are receiving their A-level results today (13th August), and those who applied to university are finding out if they've been offered a place. For those who are unsuccessful, university clearing offers another route to secure a spot on a course.
Careers expert's script for clearing calls
In a TikTok video, Hannah Morton-Hedges, founder of Momentum Careers Advice, shared a script students can use when phoning a university's clearing team. She advised not to "overthink" opening lines, but to give your name, the course you're calling about, and ask if they can give you a verbal offer.
Universities expect these calls and will lead the conversation, but you need to have certain information ready.
What will the clearing team ask?
According to Hannah, you'll need to provide your clearing number or UCAS ID, though you don't need a clearing number to be eligible. You'll also be asked about your grades; be honest, but bring up any contextual information or mitigating circumstances.
They may give a verbal offer, turn you away, or ask for more information, such as your motivations for the course.
After the call
Some universities make verbal offers during the call, while others may email later, especially for competitive courses. Some courses may require an in-person interview.
At the end of the call, ask clarifying questions about accommodation, academic requirements, or whether the verbal offer will be confirmed by email.
If you're denied a spot
Hannah recommends asking if there are similar courses you might be suitable for. You can also use the UCAS Clearing tool to search for other open courses. Taking a gap year and reapplying is also an option, possibly with a foundation course or re-sitting exams.
