Miss Smith, a student at Wilberforce Sixth Form College, said she had been bullied for seven years and had only recently begun to leave the house again. She said the attack has set her back and she is now too scared to go out.
Humberside Police arrested a 17-year-old girl on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. She has been released on bail while investigations continue. Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack, which occurred at the junction of Albert Avenue and Cobden Street on Wednesday at 9.20pm.
Friends of Miss Smith said she was 'set up' and that without a friend's help she could have been completely blind or dead. Hundreds of wellwishers have offered support online.
The incident comes amid rising concern over acid attacks in the UK, with 21 court cases in 2013 compared to five in 2012.
