The BBC has issued a clear reminder to viewers of Celebrity Traitors, with the series already four episodes in. The reminder comes as the next episode is scheduled to air on Thursday, October 15, at 8pm, and viewers without a TV Licence may need to act quickly to avoid a fine.
Just before the show started, a female voiceover played over a shot of Claudia Winkleman, telling viewers: “Loving The Celebrity Traitors? Enjoy it all with a TV Licence.” The TV Licensing logo then appeared on screen.
Potential £1,000 fine for unlicensed viewers
TV Licensing explains: "You could be prosecuted if we find that you have been watching, recording or downloading programmes illegally. The maximum penalty is a £1,000 fine plus any legal costs and/or compensation you may be ordered to pay. The maximum fine is £2,000 in Guernsey."
A standard TV Licence costs £180, while a black-and-white licence costs £60.50. The licence covers a household for all TV channels, pay TV services, live TV on streaming services, everything on BBC iPlayer, and watching, recording and downloading on any device.
What a TV Licence covers
TV Licensing notes that a Licence doesn't just cover a TV set, but other devices too, explaining: "If you're catching up on BBC iPlayer on your phone as you commute to work, you need a licence. Streaming a live YouTube channel via your game console? You need a licence. Getting stuck into Sky Sports action live on your laptop or tablet? You need a licence for this, too. This includes recording and downloading."
