Tony O'Connor, a 55-year-old cafe owner from Kirkby, has been told there is no further treatment available for his cancer. His family is now raising money for a therapy in Germany that could extend his life.
Tony was first diagnosed with bowel cancer in April 2022 after a blockage was found. He was later given the all-clear, but in 2023, symptoms returned and tests showed the cancer had spread to his liver. After chemotherapy and surgery, the cancer was described as "under control," but it later grew.
Diagnosis and new hope
Tony's wife Nicola, 52, said the hospital has stopped his treatment, telling them to "go home and enjoy what life you've got left." The couple, married for 26 years, have discovered Dendritic Cell Therapy, available in Germany, which they believe could help. This treatment helps the immune system target cancer cells with fewer side effects.
To fund the treatment, the family launched a GoFundMe page. It has received support from family friend Franny Briggs, who posted an emotional video on TikTok. Franny said the page had raised £2,495 in under 24 hours, showing the community's love for Tony.
Community support
Nicola said she was "overwhelmed" by the response. She said: "I'm more overjoyed with it to think there's people out there that can help you and because there's a timescale now. It's like an egg timer for Tony. We've always done a lot for the community and we never ever expected anything back from it."
Tony and Nicola, who have six grandchildren, opened Tony O's cafe in Kirkby last year and donated 33 dinners to families and NHS staff at Christmas. Franny said Tony is always ready to help at events, and people who don't even know him have donated after watching the video.
Family's plea
Nicola described Tony as "the backbone of the family," but he is currently very weak and has been hiding away. She said: "He's just selfless, he's just a family man. Everything he's ever done in life has always been for myself and the kids."
The family plans further fundraising events and will share details later.
