UK Social Media Ban for Under-16s: Exempt Apps Listed

The UK government has announced a ban on social media for children under 16, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer stating he will not compromise on the safety and happiness of children. The ban is expected to be introduced by spring 2027 and will cover a range of platforms, but not all.

Which Social Media Platforms Will Be Banned?

The current list includes Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, X, Reddit, and Threads. The government plans to follow Australia's model, targeting user-to-user platforms that enable social interaction and allow users to post material alongside algorithms.

A government spokesperson said: "The ban will include platforms like Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X." Additionally, the government will implement world-leading blocks on harmful functions such as livestreaming and stranger communication with children for under-16s, applying to a wider range of online services, including gaming sites.

Which Platforms Are Excluded?

Messaging apps, educational tools, e-commerce, and music streaming sites will remain outside the scope of the ban. The government confirmed it does not intend to include messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal. YouTube Kids, Google Classroom, and Lego Play will remain accessible as they lack problematic algorithmic features.

Curfews for Teenagers Aged 16 and 17

Under-16s will be blocked from social media, but options for restricting access for older children are under consideration. Curfews for 16- and 17-year-olds could be introduced to prevent late-night scrolling, with more details expected next month. Default restrictions for under-17s on harmful functions like livestreaming will also be implemented, alongside measures to prevent strangers from connecting with children.
