Butter Trick Makes Microwave Rice Taste Rich and Delicious

Stirring a spoonful of butter into microwave rice after cooking eliminates the plasticky taste and delivers a rich, decadent flavour, according to food experts at Food Republic.

Microwave rice is a reliable option for a quick and simple addition to an evening meal. One packet serves two and is ready in a couple of minutes, unlike dried rice, which takes considerably longer to cook. However, microwave rice can occasionally have an unpleasant plasticky taste.

Why Butter Works

The experts at Food Republic note that while dried rice is more cost-effective for the quantity received, microwave rice is too convenient to overlook. There is no measuring required, and within two minutes it is ready to serve alongside curry, chilli, or other dinner dishes. They also note that the flavour can sometimes 'leave a little something to be desired', so adding an additional ingredient can make an enormous difference.

Butter, which most households already have in the fridge, can introduce a far more 'decadent' taste. The experts said: "When you stir a dollop of butter into a bowl of rice, it adds a layer of decadent flavor that won't go unnoticed. It may be invisible to the naked eye, but your taste buds will know the difference. Butter, once melted, also ensures your instant rice will be clump-free and deliciously moist."

How to Use It

A single spoonful should be enough, as a small amount of butter goes a considerable way in rice. Salted butter is best, though any type available will work.

Butter is not the only addition that can elevate microwave rice. Citrus juice can also inject a burst of flavour. The juice should be added just before serving, since the fruit tastes freshest when newly squeezed. Leaving it until the final moment ensures the flavour persists throughout the meal. As with butter, a little goes a long way, so it is best to start with a small squeeze and add more if needed.
