As autumn brings colder, wetter weather, spider season begins in the UK, and Rentokil recommends a simple two-ingredient spray to keep them out. Pest control experts suggest mixing eight parts white vinegar with two parts water and transferring the solution into a spray bottle.
Why vinegar works
Rentokil said spiders absolutely “hate” the strong, acidic smell of vinegar, which helps keep them away. Once mixed, the solution can be sprayed around nooks and crannies, windowsills, and doorways where spiders may enter or settle.
White vinegar can be bought for as little as 30p per bottle and is also useful for other household tasks. Rentokil experts noted that this DIY method is temporary, adding: “Trying to get rid of spiders with a DIY vinegar and water solution can be a temporary method to deter spiders from entering your home, or choosing a snug corner to settle in.”
Longer-term prevention
For a longer-term approach, the experts recommend checking your home for potential entry points. Look around window frames, doors, walls, and pipework for gaps or cracks that could provide easy access, and seal these openings to make it harder for spiders to get inside.
Other scents can also deter spiders. PEST UK recommended lemon, lime, and oranges, saying anything with a strong citrus aroma can help keep spiders away. They also suggested eucalyptus, tea tree, or peppermint oil, rubbed or sprayed around windowsills and doors.
