A 16-year-old girl was fatally shot in the throat while styling a friend's hair during a sleepover in Kansas City, Missouri, according to court documents. Traelynn Sibley, a junior at Grandview High School, was killed on August 9 when gunfire erupted at a home on Norton Avenue.
Prosecutors charged 21-year-old Bailey Lewis with second-degree felony murder, alleging she fired shots at the residence targeting a former friend. Police said bullet casings indicated the shooter was moving southbound while firing. The home and a parked red Mazda were struck multiple times.
Witnesses described a normal evening with two girls fixing each other's hair at a vanity near the front door, while others were in the back bedroom or playing video games. A toddler was also present. The affidavit states Sibley was shot in the throat and collapsed in the bathroom, later dying at a hospital.
Detectives linked Lewis to the shooting via surveillance footage of her 2025 Hyundai Elantra driving to and from the scene. Witnesses said Lewis was upset over a previous theft and an incident where someone was assaulted at a gas station. Lewis is also connected to another shooting 15 minutes earlier.
Lewis faces charges including murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and accessory to armed criminal action. She is held on a $400,000 bond at the Jackson County Detention Center.
