A Wigan GP surgery has denied claims that it will be converted into a 15-bed house in multiple occupation (HMO), after a fabricated social media graphic resembling a genuine news story was widely shared online.
Braithwaite Road Surgery in Lowton responded to the image, which included a picture of the centre and the words 'say local MPs'. A spokesperson for the surgery apologised to any patients who may have been worried or distressed by the false information.
Surgery reassures patients
"We are aware of false information currently circulating suggesting that Braithwaite Road Surgery is to be converted into a 15-bed HMO," the spokesperson said. "We would like to reassure our patients and the wider community that this is completely untrue.
"We understand that hearing or reading information of this nature may cause concern, particularly when it relates to a local healthcare service that patients rely upon. This false information has been generated by a third party. We would encourage patients and members of the community to rely on information provided directly by the surgery or other official sources, rather than unverified information circulating on social media."
MP criticises 'fabricated headlines'
Jo Platt, MP for Lowton, also issued a statement, accusing whoever created and posted the graphic of misleading local people and attempting to generate alarm. She said: "What's particularly concerning is that this graphic has been designed to resemble a genuine news story and attributes comments to local MPs that have not been made.
"Residents deserve accurate information, not fabricated headlines designed to cause confusion and concern. The obvious question is – why would someone create and circulate fake news like this? Whatever the reason, spreading misinformation damages trust and distracts from genuine community concerns. Please take a moment to verify information before sharing it, and help ensure that facts, not fake news, shape local conversations."
Practice rated 'good' by CQC
Braithwaite Road Surgery currently provides services to around 5,100 people. A Care Quality Commission inspection report in July found the practice to be 'good' in all areas. Wigan Council's planning portal currently contains no live planning applications for Braithwaite Road.
