Two people have died in a house fire that broke out in the early hours of Wednesday on Cragside Avenue in North Shields. Emergency services were called shortly after 3:30 a.m., and upon arrival, firefighters discovered a man in his 40s and a woman in her 70s inside the property. Despite immediate efforts by responders, both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation Underway
Northumbria Police have informed the next of kin of both victims. Detective Inspector Barry McAtominey, Senior Investigating Officer, stated: 'This is an absolutely devastating incident in which two people have tragically lost their lives. All of our thoughts and condolences are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. Enquiries remain at a very early stage, and with the support of our partners from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, we are determined to establish exactly what happened.'
Police are appealing for anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward. Two neighboring properties were evacuated as a precaution, and a cordon remains in place around the scene.
Fire Service Response
A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson confirmed that five fire appliances attended the incident. The emergency call was received at 3:27 a.m., and crews from Tynemouth, Byker, South Shields, and Gosforth Community Fire Stations were dispatched. Firefighters rescued persons from the property and extinguished the blaze.
Three ambulances, a rapid response paramedic, a duty officer, a clinical team leader, and three hazardous area response team resources were also sent to the scene.
