Tributes to 'much-loved' husband and grandad David Reed

The family of David Reed, a 51-year-old from South Hylton, have paid tribute to him following his death after a collision in Washington last month.

Shortly before 1am on Friday, September 11, police were informed of a collision on Nissan Way in Washington. It was reported that a black Mercedes-Benz AMG car had struck a pedal bicycle.

Emergency services attended the scene, and the rider of the pedal bicycle, now named as David Reed, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation and arrest

Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) launched a full investigation into the incident, and a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was later released on police bail pending further enquiries. Officers continue to urge any witnesses to come forward.

Family tribute

In a tribute, David’s family, who described him as working in automotive manufacturing, said: “Our whole family has been left completely heartbroken by the sudden and tragic loss of our beloved David.

“He was a devoted husband, much-loved dad and grandad, cherished son, brother and uncle, and a true friend to so many.

“He was one of the kindest, gentlest men you could ever meet, with a heart of gold and an infectious laugh that so many of his friends will remember.

“Family was everything to David. He adored his grandchildren and would do absolutely anything for the people he loved. He was also Sunderland through and through, and his love for SAFC will forever be part of how we remember him.

“We still cannot comprehend that he is gone. The messages, memories and stories we have received from his friends and everyone who knew him have brought us so much comfort and shown us just how loved he truly was.

“Thank you to everyone who tried to help David that morning, the emergency services, and everyone who has reached out, donated, laid flowers or supported our family.

“He was loved beyond words and will be missed every single day. There will forever be a David-shaped hole in our family. We love you more than you will ever know, David. Until we meet again.”

Sergeant Greg Huntley, of Northumbria Police, said: “The thoughts of everyone within Northumbria Police remain firmly with David’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.

“We have carried out a variety of enquiries since the collision took place on the morning of September 11 and would reiterate that we would like to hear from anybody with information who has not yet contacted us.
