Tadhg Callaghan Carter, a 15-year-old boy, was killed and two other spectators were injured on Saturday when a competing car left the road and struck them during the Donegal International Rally. The tragic incident occurred at location 15 on special stage 12 Gartan, a left-hand bend, prompting the immediate cancellation of the remaining events.
Details of the Incident
Emergency services were alerted to an incident involving a participating car. Tadhg was transported by ambulance to Letterkenny University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The two other spectators are receiving hospital treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
Gardaí have launched an investigation alongside Motorsport Ireland, the governing body for four-wheeled motorsport in Ireland. Both organisations have urged the public not to share video footage of the incident circulating on social media.

Tadhg's school, Saint Euan's College, released a statement expressing profound sadness. The school said: "It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that our school community learns of the sudden and tragic passing of our student, Tadhg Callaghan-Carter. Tadhg had just completed his Junior Cert examinations and was preparing to enter Fifth Year this coming September. He was a deeply valued and popular member of our school community, and his loss will be felt deeply by his classmates, friends, teachers, and everyone who knew him."
The school will open from 11am on Sunday to provide support for pupils, parents, staff, and the local community.
Event Cancellation and Rally Background
Motorsport Ireland and Donegal Motor Club said they were "deeply saddened" by the tragedy and cancelled the remainder of the three-day festival as a mark of respect. The rally, described as "one of the toughest rally challenges there is for drivers and teams," features 20 stages along the north-west coast of County Donegal. Organisers report it attracts over 70,000 spectators and nearly 400,000 viewers on television and online.
