Teen killed in Donegal Rally crash named as Tadhg Callaghan Carter

Tadhg Callaghan Carter, a 15-year-old schoolboy, was killed on Saturday when a rally car swerved off the road and crashed into a crowd of spectators during the Donegal International Rally. Two other people were injured in the incident, which occurred at location 15 on special stage 12 in Gartan, County Donegal.

Incident Details

The crash happened at a left-hand bend when a participating car left the road and struck spectators. Emergency services were alerted and Tadhg was taken by ambulance to Letterkenny University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The two other spectators sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are receiving hospital treatment.

Event Cancellation and Investigation

Motorsport Ireland and Donegal Motor Club expressed deep sadness over the incident and cancelled the remainder of the three-day rally as a mark of respect. In a statement, they said, "We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred today." Both organisations, along with Gardaí, have launched a full investigation into the accident. They have also urged the public not to share video footage of the crash circulating on social media.

Tributes from School

Saint Euan's College, Tadhg's school, paid tribute to him on Sunday, stating, "It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that our school community learns of the sudden and tragic passing of our student, Tadhg Callaghan-Carter." The school noted that Tadhg had just completed his Junior Cert examinations and was preparing to enter Fifth Year. "He was a deeply valued and popular member of our school community, and his loss will be felt deeply by his classmates, friends, teachers, and everyone who knew him," the tribute continued. The school will open from 11am on Monday to support students, parents, staff, and the local community.

The Donegal International Rally is a three-day event that attracts more than 70,000 spectators and nearly 400,000 viewers on TV and online. Participants compete in 20 stages around the north-west coast of County Donegal, and the event is known as "one of the toughest rally challenges there is for drivers and teams."
