Teen Dies in Donegal Rally Crash, Event Cancelled

A teenage motorsport fan has died following a tragic accident at the Donegal International Rally in Ireland on Saturday, 20 June 2026. The incident occurred during the first pass of the Gartan stage, the 12th of 20 stages in the three-day event, when a competing car left the road and struck spectators. The remainder of the rally was cancelled as a mark of respect.

Police Statement and Investigation

Gardaí (Irish police) issued a statement confirming the death of a male youth in his mid-teens. Emergency services were alerted shortly before 5pm after a number of spectators were injured at Trentagh, near Kilmacrennan. The victim was taken by ambulance to Letterkenny University Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. Two other spectators sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are receiving hospital treatment.

The Garda statement added: "The local Coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged. The scene has been preserved for a technical examination and investigations are ongoing." Authorities also appealed to the public not to share images or video footage of the incident circulating on social media.

Motorsport Ireland Response

Motorsport Ireland, the governing body for four-wheeled motorsport in Ireland, released a joint statement with Donegal Motor Club expressing deep sadness. "We are deeply saddened to confirm that a young male spectator has passed away following an accident on the twelfth stage of the Donegal International Rally," the statement read. "As a mark of respect the organisers have cancelled the remainder of the event."

The statement continued: "Motorsport Ireland together with An Garda Siochana have begun a full investigation into the circumstances of the accident. Motorsport Ireland are aware that video footage of the accident is circulating on social media and would ask anyone that sees it not to share it. Motorsport Ireland and Donegal Motor Club express their deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased and ask that everyone respect their privacy at this time."

Previous Fatalities at the Event

This is the first fatality at the Donegal International Rally since three-time winner Manus Kelly died in a crash during the 2019 event. In 2008, an 18-year-old spectator was killed when a car left the road, and in 2002, two marshals died in a separate accident. The rally is considered one of the biggest motorsport events in Ireland, drawing large crowds each year.
