York Revolution, a professional baseball team, forfeited a game after several players refused to wear Pride-themed jerseys. The team had scheduled the game against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Thursday as part of its 11th annual Pride Night, with players expected to wear uniforms featuring rainbow sleeves.
Player Refusal Leads to Cancellation
The Revolution stated that multiple players declined to wear the Pride Night jerseys. In response, the club decided to cancel the game, opting instead to make the evening a free celebration focused on recognition and inclusion. The team emphasized that hosting the event was more important than forcing players to wear jerseys they were uncomfortable with.
Statement from the Team
“Unfortunately, several of our players have refused to wear the scheduled Pride Night jersey and the club decided that hosting the event is more important than forcing players to wear jerseys they are not comfortable with and playing the game,” the team said. “As a result, and out of respect for the Pride Community and the York community as a whole, the York Revolution has decided that the game on Thursday, June 18 will be forfeited and that Pride Night will continue on as the feature element of the evening at WellSpan Park.”
Context and Background
The Revolution and Blue Crabs compete in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, which is not affiliated with Major League Baseball (MLB). The players' refusal was not entirely unexpected, as many baseball players come from conservative or religious backgrounds. This incident follows a similar event in MLB, where the league criticized players who wrote Bible verses on their Pride Night caps.
MLB Incident
During a recent San Francisco Giants game, pitchers Landen Roupp and JT Brubaker wrote Bible verses on their Pride caps, while another pitcher, Sam Hentges, chose not to wear the cap at all. MLB issued a statement condemning these actions.
The York Revolution's decision to forfeit the game underscores the ongoing tensions between personal beliefs and team inclusivity initiatives in professional sports.
