A resident was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after escaping a house fire in North Tyneside. Emergency services were called to an address on Waterville Road, in Meadow Well, at around 11.25am on Saturday.
Fire crews tackle blaze
Firefighters from Hebburn, Tynemouth and Wallsend Community Fire Stations were dispatched to the scene. A section of the road was cordoned off as crews worked to bring the fire under control.
The occupant had already self-rescued before firefighters arrived. Crews wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.
Hospital treatment and response
The resident was taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, in Cramlington, for treatment. Police and ambulance crews also attended the incident.
A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We can confirm that on the morning of Saturday 3 October, three fire appliances attended a residential fire in North Tyneside. The emergency call was received by our fire control team at 11.19am, and crews from Hebburn, Tynemouth and Wallsend Community Fire Stations were dispatched to an address on Waterville Road, North Shields."
The spokesperson added: "The occupant of the property had self-rescued before crews arrived at the scene, where firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets to safely extinguish the fire. Colleagues from Northumbria Police and North East Ambulance Service were also in attendance. The resident was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. Crews left the scene at 12.12pm."
Northumbria Police confirmed officers were in attendance in support of the fire brigade. The North East Ambulance Service dispatched one ambulance crew, one clinical team leader and one HART crew (Hazardous Area Response Team) to the incident.
