Porthcawl takeaway £700 damage as Elvis flags torn down

The BoatHouse Fish Bar on the Esplanade in Porthcawl is counting the cost after a group of people pulled down flags that had been put out for the Elvis Festival. The owners say around £700 of damage was caused when the American-themed decorations were torn down.

Incident caught on CCTV

A group of three people - two men and one woman - were seen on camera jumping up and pulling down the USA flags. The owners have issued an appeal for the culprits to come forward after the incident was caught on CCTV.

The flags had been put up to mark the Elvis Festival, one of the largest events of its kind in the world, which draws around 40,000 fans to the Welsh seaside town every September.

Festival draws thousands

Pubs throughout the town host independent acts, while visitors and pets turn out in full costume - including rhinestone jumpsuits, quiffs, and the popular 'Hound Dog' best-dressed dog competition. It is a massive event for the seaside town, with lots of local businesses getting involved.

Since opening the fish shop 13 years ago, owners of The BoatHouse said they have not had any trouble in Porthcawl and value their local customers.

Owners unsure about future decorations

A spokesperson for the shop said: "We usually decorate the shop each season, but the incident has made us unsure if we will do it again." The incident has not been reported to South Wales Police.
