Person thrown in bin and pushed onto DART tracks in Dublin

A potentially fatal incident was narrowly avoided on Sunday evening after a person was thrown into a large bin, which was then pushed onto train tracks in north Dublin.

The attack took place on the Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART) network at Harmonstown, just after 8pm on Sunday. A group forced the victim into the bin before pushing it onto the tracks with the victim inside.

Victim escapes before train stops

The victim was injured after falling onto the tracks but managed to get out of the way before the driver of an oncoming train saw the bin and brought the train to a halt in time.

Barry Kenny, Corporate Communications Manager at Iarnród Éireann, said: "This was an appalling attack which had the potential to be much worse."

Potential for serious injury

Kenny added: "While the victim was able to immediately get off the track and back onto the platform, the driver of a Northbound DART saw the bin which was still on the tracks as the train approached and brought the DART to a halt in time."

"However, had the individual been incapacitated by the fall, an express service such as an Enterprise or Commuter service would have taken a much longer time to stop, with the obvious potential for serious or fatal injury."

Investigation underway

Ambulance services, Gardaí and Iarnród Éireann security and infrastructure staff attended the scene. Services were delayed for 18 minutes.

CCTV has been retained to assist Gardaí with their investigation, and anyone with further information has been asked to contact the Gardaí. The Mirror has approached Garda Síochána for comment.
