Nick Knowles Leaves TV to Care for Wife After Surgery

Television presenter Nick Knowles, best known for hosting DIY SOS, has announced he is stepping back from his broadcasting career to care for his wife, Katie Dadzie, after she underwent emergency surgery. The 63-year-old star told the Daily Mail's Richard Eden that he needs to 'disappear' for a while to support her recovery.

Wife's Health Emergency

Katie Dadzie, 36, a lingerie businesswoman, was rushed to hospital after her cervix ruptured following a hysterectomy. The couple had married at Braxted Park Estate in Essex in June 2025, just weeks before the incident. Katie had undergone the hysterectomy last summer after suffering 'years of pain' from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis and adenomyosis. However, 12 weeks into recovery, the stitches in her cervix ruptured, causing 'crippling abdominal pains.'

Describing the ordeal as 'the most terrifying day I've ever had,' Katie posted on social media: 'The bit where they took my cervix and sealed it up ruptured, which basically meant my insides went rogue, with crippling abdominal pains, difficulty breathing, incredibly painful gas, blood like Moses parting the Red Sea, fluid, and even my bowel where it definitely didn't belong.' She added that she nearly passed out from the pain and cried alone on the kitchen floor from 2am to 5.30am.

Urgent Surgery and Recovery

Katie was readmitted to hospital for emergency treatment. She said: 'I thought it would be lots of waiting round, but they did blood tests, a CT scan, and had me morphined up and ready for surgery in under 10 hours.' There were concerns about a perforated bowel, which could have required open surgery and a lumbar puncture. Fortunately, the immediate crisis was resolved, but Katie now faces further surgery.

Nick, who impressed viewers during his injury-affected appearance on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing in 2024, said: 'I've been looking after my wife a lot because she has been through it. She's had a lot of tough times. She's got another operation coming up.' He added: 'I will disappear for a while because I'll be looking after her. I'm always worried [about her], but she's a warrior and a fighter, so I know she'll be fine.'

Impact on TV Career

Knowles, known for hosting programmes from National Lottery gameshow Break the Safe to Home Is Where the Art Is, will take an indefinite break from television. His decision underscores the seriousness of his wife's condition and his commitment to her care. The couple's ordeal highlights the complications that can arise from hysterectomies and the importance of post-surgical monitoring.
