Neighbour sparks driveway nightmare after staging 'parking protest'
Neighbour's parking protest sparks driveway nightmare

A homeowner claims they were locked in a “parking protest” with their neighbour after a row over who was entitled to park in a specific spot. Even if you have your own private driveway, parking is a fairly common dispute among neighbours, especially when spaces are limited.

Reddit user details the dispute

Posting on Reddit, a concerned homeowner (@Bubbly-Subject-3475) explained: “I’m based in England and recently had a note left on my car from a neighbour saying please stop parking outside my house (not a dropped curb and no driveway is blocked by doing so). My husband parks on our drive, so if someone has also parked outside of my own house, I will then park wherever there is space, which occasionally happens to be the space outside their house.”

The Reddit poster adds that their actions are “totally legal” as the space does not belong to anyone – it is public property. However, they continued: “Last night I had to park in that space, and then witnessed the neighbour pull up outside my house and park fully in front of our driveway. We knocked on their door and had no answer, so I reported it to the council.”

Neighbour's response and legal implications

Reporting a car that is blocking your driveway with an official dropped kerb can lead to a £70 Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) or higher. It is often discounted to £35 if paid quickly, though the exact fine amount depends on the specific local council.

The homeowner says they were stunned by the neighbour’s response, and claims that they “parked there in protest to [the homeowner] parking outside their house”. They said: “I get it might be annoying, but they don’t own the space, it is public.”

“They were very rude and aggressive, saying that I was ‘disrespectful’ for parking there (despite them literally parking in front of our driveway).” The post also claims that the neighbour boasted they’d get any fine cancelled because they allegedly “work for the council”.

What does the law say about parking on the street outside someone else’s house?

In the UK, it is entirely legal to park on a public street outside someone else’s house. Homeowners do not automatically have a legal right to the public road space directly outside their property, and anyone with a taxed, insured vehicle can park there as long as no local restrictions are violated.

Street parking must not break any of the following rules to remain in line with the law. You must not park across a dropped kerb if it prevents a homeowner from accessing or leaving their driveway. The vehicle must not cause an unnecessary obstruction to traffic, pedestrians, or emergency vehicles. You cannot park in bays requiring a Resident Parking Permit unless you are authorised. You cannot ignore yellow lines or school zigzags. Persistent parking deliberately meant to harass a specific resident can cross into anti-social behaviour.
