Mother Charged After Baby Dies Alone at Home

Ja'keisa Knox, a 29-year-old mother in Alabama, is facing felony child abuse charges after her 9-month-old baby died while left home alone for approximately eight hours. The incident occurred on Tuesday, when Knox returned to her Tuscaloosa apartment around 4 p.m. and found her child unresponsive, prompting a 911 call. The infant was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Mother Admits Leaving Baby Unattended

According to investigators, Knox told authorities she was the sole caregiver and left the baby alone at 8 a.m. while she went to work. The child was unattended until her return. Medical personnel noted the baby had numerous physical injuries, was severely underweight, and showed signs of malnutrition. The case has drawn widespread attention due to the severity of neglect.

Autopsy Pending; Charges May Be Upgraded

The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences is conducting an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death. Authorities stated that depending on the results, Knox's current charge could be upgraded. She is being held at the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond.
