A 39-year-old Moroccan woman died in a freak accident while celebrating her country's 3-0 World Cup victory over Canada on July 5, 2026, in Algeciras, southern Spain. The flag she wore around her neck became entangled in the rear wheel of her husband's high-powered motorcycle, causing a severe neck injury.
Details of the Incident
The accident occurred around 11 p.m. in the San Garcia neighborhood of Algeciras, a city with a significant Moroccan community. Witnesses told police that the flag caught in the wheel as the couple rode the motorcycle. The woman went into cardiac arrest at the scene. Police administered CPR until paramedics arrived, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Punta Europa Hospital.
Police Investigation and Official Response
Police confirmed that the husband passed a drink-drive test. An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Algeciras Mayor Jose Ignacio Landaluce expressed being "deeply dismayed" and offered support to the family, stating, "We stand with them in their grief." Algeciras is home to about 10,000 Moroccans among its 128,000 inhabitants.

A police source told a local paper that witnesses saw him fall and the initial hypothesis was death by asphyxiation.
