Six people were killed and 18 others injured in three separate shootings at high school football homecoming celebrations in Mississippi, local officials confirmed on Saturday.
The deadliest incident occurred around midnight on Friday in Leland, where four people died and at least 16 were wounded. Mayor John Lee said four victims were airlifted to Jackson in critical condition, while 12 others were treated at local hospitals. The attack took place on a main street after the town's homecoming game.
State Senator Derrick Simmons confirmed the airlift to the University of Mississippi Medical Center. No suspects have been named, and no arrests have been made in connection with the Leland shooting as of Saturday afternoon. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the inquiry.
In Heidelberg, about 200 miles southeast, a shooting during the local school's homecoming weekend left two dead. Police Chief Cornell White said a suspect remains at large. In Rolling Fork, a third shooting on Friday night at South Delta High School resulted in two injuries. The Sharkey County Sheriff's Office reported two arrests in connection with that incident.
Mayor Lee expressed condolences, saying, 'We need to be in prayer for our city.' Leland, with a population of about 3,800, is in Washington County. The Heidelberg shooting is being investigated by Jasper County authorities, who are seeking an 18-year-old man for questioning.
