Authorities in Michigan have identified Kristopher Karolkiewicz as the man who fatally shot his wife, Amanda, and their six children on Friday before setting their home on fire in Grand Haven Township. The Ottawa County sheriff's office said autopsy results showed all eight died of gunshot wounds, with Kristopher shooting himself. The deaths of Amanda and the children were ruled homicides.
The fire at the home on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan was intentionally set in multiple parts of the house after the killings, though officials are still investigating the point of origin. Sheriff Eric DeBoer called it an unspeakable tragedy in a statement read by Deputy Captain Jacob Sparks.

Friday's killings were at least the 13th mass murder in the US in 2026, according to the Gun Violence Archive. At least eight fit the definition of a family annihilation, a crime most commonly committed by an armed male on multiple close family members. A July 2023 Indianapolis Star investigation found such events occur every five days on average across the US.
The violence is one of more than 270 mass shootings reported this year as of Tuesday morning. Mass shootings are defined as incidents with four or more victims shot, fatally or non-fatally. The high numbers have prompted calls for federal gun control, but Congress has not implemented such restrictions.
Investigation and Background
Authorities initially said they were not looking for outside suspects after discovering the massacre. The children's names have not been released. Officials had investigated a smoky smell near the home on Friday morning but found nothing. Three hours later, after further reports, they returned to find smoke and the bodies. The family's dogs and at least one cat also died in the blaze.
Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, was a vice-president of sales and marketing for the American Heart Association from September 2023 to earlier in July, when his employment ended, the organization said. He worked remotely for a CPR and first aid training division. Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, was an elementary school substitute teacher who went by Mandy. Her mother and stepfather, Becky and Steve Lawwill, described her as a kind and devoted soul who loved her family and students.
The couple met at a beverage company in 2008 and married in August 2009. Mandy wrote a parenting blog describing the birth of their first child in April 2011 as the best day of her life. Three more sons followed, and they adopted two daughters and had another biological son. Kristopher described himself as a lucky guy in a 2019 Facebook post.
Online posts attributed to Amanda under the Reddit username MandyK1179 revealed marital turbulence, including an emotional affair with an intern. She wrote about wanting to leave but committing to work on the marriage for the children's sake. She said they were in a much better place but it was still a fight to stay healthy.
A 2010 report by the office of justice programs found that unemployment combined with a history of domestic violence was a significant risk factor for murder-suicide, tipping the scale following previous abuse.
